CFA selects 19 local leaders for
fellowship program

Center for the Future of Arizona has selected 19 Fellows – including Kelle Maslyn, assistant director at Pima County Economic Development – for its second Southern Arizona Workforce Leadership Academy, a professional development program offered in partnership with Pima Community College and the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program.

This 10-month leadership program brings together local leaders to collaborate on workforce development transformation across all points, including hiring, training and retaining talent.

Economic Development deputy director’s work amounts to millions

Patrick Kavanaugh

Patrick Cavanaugh, who is retiring Feb. 14 as deputy director of Pima County Economic Development, joined the County in 2004 as chief of staff to the late District 1 Supervisor Ann Day.

During his tenure with Economic Development, Cavanaugh played crucial roles in attracting major businesses such as HomeGoods, Caterpillar, World View, and American Battery Factory to Pima County. In addition to the hundreds of jobs created, he also was instrumental in retaining millions of dollars of capital investment in the region.

Tech Launch AZ, UACI startups earn money and compete for more

Precision Epigenomics was recently awarded a $100,000 seed grant from the Flinn Foundation to promote translational research. The company is a startup client of the University of Arizona Center for Innovation that was monitored and supported by Tech Launch Arizona.

The funding will be used to help develop a new test for oropharyngeal cancers using a gargle rinse to collect specimens.

PCC cuts the ribbons at its new health professions building

PCC ceremony

Pima Community College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 24 to celebrate its new Center of Excellence in Health Professionals.

The 80,000-square-foot facility will offer state-of-the-art classrooms to provide learners with hands-on instruction in numerous health care fields.

Expansion of health services will lead to strong job growth, comprising an estimated 34% of all new jobs – or an additional 176,000 jobs – between 2020-2028. By 2030, Arizona will need more than 190,000 new direct care workers.
