Green Valley Community Chorus

Christmas program raises more than $3K
for Historic Canoa Ranch

The 2024 Christmas at Canoa program was a tremendous success! This year’s program drew a total of 2,052 visitors to Historic Canoa Ranch during the month of December. In addition, the program raised more than $3,600 in donations for restoration and upkeep of the ranch.

Thank you to everyone who shared this holiday season with us, and to everyone who generously donated to help preserve our beautiful ranch! A special thanks also goes to this year's musical guests, including Green Valley Concert Band Brass Choir, Green Valley Community Chorus, Walden Grove High School Jazz Band, and Desert Ukes Ukulele Ensemble.

We wish all of you a happy start to the new year!

Bird of the Month: Virginia Rail

Virginia Rail

The Virginia Rail might look a little like a chicken, but it is a marsh bird with a long, heavy bill and a short, upturned tail. It can be found predominately in fresh and brackish wetlands such as the Cienega at Historic Canoa Ranch.

The forehead feathers of a Virginia Rail are adapted to withstand the kind of wear and tear that results from pushing through dense and often sharp marsh vegetation, which is the bird's favorite habitat.

How many birds have you seen at Historic Canoa Ranch? Use this handy checklist to keep track of the discoveries you've made!

Shedding a little light on things

Kerosene container and oil lamp

We take electric lighting for granted, but it hasn't always been available to us. In the days before the invention of the electric light bulb, oil lamps like the one seen in this photo were the best way to provide indoor illumination after the sun went down. This vintage lamp is on display at Historic Canoa Ranch, along with many other treasures from the past.

Even after electric lighting was available, however, oil lamps were still widely used in rural communities and remote homes such as the ranch because access to electricity was limited. The oil lamp seen in this picture may have helped the ranch’s residents enjoy many happy hours of late-night reading!

Pima County Parks & Recreation
wants to hear from you!

Pima County Parks & Recreation is conducting a Master Plan to provide a strategic road map for the future of Pima County urban parks, recreational amenities and programming over the next 10-25 years. Your opinion matters; take the 10-15 minute survey and provide your feedback to ensure the right amenity will be built at the right location that fits your needs. Those who complete the survey will be entered to win a $100 prize!
