PACC offering free mega spay/neuter event for community cats Nov. 1-3
PIMA COUNTY, Oct. 18, 2024 – Pima Animal Care Center is holding a free spay and neuter event, called Snip ‘n’ Tip, for community cats Nov. 1-3 in PACC’s Multi-Purpose Room, 4000 N. Silverbell Road.
The Snip ‘n’ Tip event is one of several programs offered by PACC’s Community Cat Trap-Neuter-Return Program. Known more commonly as TNR, the Trap-Neuter-Return program is a humane and effective way to reduce the number of cats living on the streets in Pima County. During Snip ‘n’ Tip, the shelter invites any member of the public to participate by bringing in outdoor cats in secure cat carriers or humane traps.
Monica Dangler, PACC’s director, says that events like Snip ‘n’ Tip are crucial to protect Pima County’s cats.
“PACC has seen an incredibly busy kitten season this year,” said Dangler. “The more community cats we’re able to alter at events like Snip ‘n’ Tip, the fewer homeless kittens will come into the shelter every year and the healthier Pima County pets will be.”
The Snip n’ Tip event is only for community cats and kittens living outdoors in Pima County. The easiest way to tell if a cat in your neighborhood is fixed is by checking to see whether they have a tipped ear, which provides a visible marker that they have been spayed or neutered.
People who bring cats will be responsible for returning them back to their neighborhood. Kittens should weigh at least 1.5 pounds and have a committed caretaker to monitor them after surgery.
Appointments are required and can be booked at app.waitwhile.com/book/snipntip. When signing up through the link, trappers will be notified when the cats are ready to pick up.
If people need to borrow a trap or carrier for the cats they’re bringing in, they can contact PACC’s Community Cat Program by emailing communitycats@pima.gov.
All cats will receive:
- A brief exam by a licensed veterinarian
- FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) vaccines
- Rabies vaccines
- Parasite treatment as needed
- Minor medical care as needed
- Microchip implantation
- An ear tip (humanely conducted under anesthesia)
- Female cats will also receive a green tattoo next to the spay site (humanely conducted under anesthesia)
PACC spayed and neutered 552 community cats at their previous Snip n’ Tip event hosted earlier this year. PACC leadership is hoping to care for 600 cats during November’s effort.
This event is made possible by Friends of Pima Animal Care Center, Petco Love, Bonnie Kay, Melinda Correll, and Colorado Animal Rescue Express.
