DHS awards additional funds for sheltering programs

The Department of Homeland Security notified the County on Aug. 28 it had been allocated another $18,706,639 to reimburse costs incurred providing temporary shelter and travel assistance to legally processed asylum seekers released into Santa Cruz, Cochise, and Pima counties by DHS. At the current rate of releases, this additional funding will allow the County to continue the Temporary Sheltering Program well into 2025.

Development Services continues keeping fees low

Inflation may be hitting other areas, but not the fees at the County’s Development Services Department. As an enterprise fund, Development Services has the ability to raise or lower fees depending on its own revenue stream. Thanks for prudent fiscal management and robust activity around building permits, the department has been able to decrease fees by 5 percent each of the last four years.

County steadily paying off debt

Pima County’s debt is projected to decrease from $953 million in Fiscal Year 2023/24 to $424 million by the end of FY 2027/28, reflecting a reduction of $529 million, or 56%, assuming no additional debt is issued. The FY 2024/25 Adopted Budget includes the capacity to issue up to $40 million in Certificates of Participation and $55 million in Sewer Revenue Debt, aligning with debt issuance trends over the past five years.

Northwest Service Center set to open in early 2025

Several County programs will be making a move in early 2025 with the opening of the Northwest Service Center, 1010 W. Miracle Mile Road. Among those moving are the Health Department clinic on First Avenue; Community and Workforce Development Services currently located at 340 N. Commerce Park Loop; as well as the Health Department’s Vital Records and Consumer Health and Food Safety divisions currently located at the Abrams Public Health Center.
