Pima County launches new online parks and recreation reservation system

PIMA COUNTY, Aug. 9, 2024 – Signing up for a program at Pima County Parks & Recreation is now faster and easier than ever.

The department launched its new online reservation system Aug. 1. The public can use it to rent a ramada, sign up for an art class, or register for a program at a community center.

Pima County Conservation Lands & Resources (CLR) will also use Kaizen as its platform for recreational reservations. CLR maintains Pima County’s natural resource parks, operates the Gilbert Ray Campground and Environmental Education programs, and manages trails, among other amenities.

“This new system is more user-friendly for the public as well as our staff, and it includes bilingual navigation,” said Callie Norton, community engagement coordinator at Parks & Recreation. “It’s also more cost-effective than the previous service. It’s really the ideal platform for our needs.”

The platform was provided by Kaizen Labs, a civic technology company that has worked with cities such as Denver and San Antonio to modernize their recreation and permitting services. A contract with Kaizen was approved by the Pima County Board of Supervisors May 7.

Kristy Diaz-Trahan, recreation division manager for Parks & Recreation, said Kaizen was chosen because of its ability to customize the platform, which will result in an easier, more intuitive system for all users.

“We are excited to be working with the brilliant brain-trust from the Kaizen team,” Diaz-Trahan said. “They have been on a listening journey with our team to ensure the new system meets the needs of Pima County residents now and in the future.”

Diaz-Trahan said that the transfer to Kaizen from Parks & Recreation’s previous reservation platform, ActiveNet, will unfold in two phases. Starting immediately, the public can use the new platform to access any online reservation services that were previously offered through ActiveNet.

Eventually, the platform will enable users to reserve athletic fields online, sign up for swim lessons and apply for special events permits.
