Sharpen your skates – Board approves Mosaic Quarter, which includes much desired iceplex

The Board of Supervisors March 5 approved the first phase of leases for Mosaic Quarter, a sports and entertainment complex that will generate billions of dollars in revenue and support tens of thousands of jobs over the 40-year term of the master lease. Once completed, Mosaic Quarter Phase 1 is projected to generate $8.3 billion of new local spending in addition to $917.7 million in tax revenue over the term of its lease.

Pima CAN! (Climate Action Now!) – County climate plan ready

The Department of Environment Quality has completed its regional Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP). It is a comprehensive priority and project list from the County, City of Tucson, Town of Oro Valley, City of South Tucson, and the Tohono O’odham Nation. We’re calling the effort Pima CAN! (Climate Action Now!). The projects represented in the PCAP align with U.S. EPA priorities and there are 25 distinct projects included in the plan that address buildings, water, transportation, wastewater electricity efficiency, fleet electrification, carbon capture from the landfill and wastewater treatment, carbon sinks, and solar installations.

Procurement Excellence

The Board of Supervisors proclaimed March Procurement Professionals Month at its March 5 meeting. Our Procurement Department is among the finest in the nation and has won the industry’s most prestigious award 19 years in a row. The department ensures County taxpayers are receiving the absolute best value for their money through competitive and fair procurement of goods and services. The National Institute of Government Purchasing reaccredited the department this year. Procurement is one of only 167 procurement agencies out of 3,000 in the country that has met NIGP’s rigorous standards.

Transition Center keeping people out of jail, off to successful start

The Board at its March 5 meeting received an update from Justice Service’s Department’s Transition Center. The County opened the center next to the County Adult Detention Center in August and in its first six months of operation it has helped numerous people stabilize their lives and keep them out of jail. The Center engages with individuals leaving custody and connects them with resources and services, including treatment, housing, employment, and more. Of the 500 people it’s served in the first six months, 97 percent accepted assistance and 90 percent avoided being rebooked into the jail 30 days after their release.
