PACC annual report: shelter outpaces national trends in positive outcomes

The Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) took in 17,081 pets and achieved a live release rate of 90.68 percent, according to the Center’s 2023 Annual Report. Among the report’s highlights was a 42 percent increase in the reporting of lost and found pets due to PACC’s implementation of PetcoLove Lost, a no-cost national platform that uses pet facial recognition to help identify lost pets. PACC continues to outpace the national trend in most areas, according to Shelters Animal Count, a nonprofit foundation that maintains animal sheltering statistics nationwide.

Board accepts $3.5M grant to address unsheltered homelessness

The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to accept a $3.5 million grant from the Arizona Department of Housing to address unsheltered homelessness. According to Keon Montgomery of the Arizona Department of Housing, the Pima County was among more than 100 applicants competing for $40 million in available funds. The $3.5 million will be used for improvements to the non-congregate shelter used by the County’s Emergency Eviction Legal Services (EELS) emergency housing program.

Blue ribbon jail commission issues final report

The commission charged with reviewing the condition and needs of the Pima County Jail has issued its final report. The commission had been assigned three tasks: (1) Assess the current condition of the jail and the need for capacity improvements and/or a new facility; (2) Assess how best practices and standards have changed since the current facility was built; and (3) Assess available funding options. The Board of Supervisors will consider the commission’s report, as well as the County Administrator’s review and recommendations, at its meeting February 20.

County’s preschool scholarship program earns high marks in independent review

Pima Early Education Program Scholarships, or “PEEPS,” received a 95 percent satisfaction rating from parents of children enrolled in the program, according to a comprehensive review conducted by the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona. The program, which provides pre-K scholarships for income-eligible families, helped increase K-12 enrollment among participating school districts, and better prepared preschoolers for kindergarten, according to the review.
