Supervisors appoint former District 3 PCC Board Member Sylvia Lee to finish Bronson's term
The Board of Supervisors appointed Sylvia M. Lee, Ph.D., to fill the seat vacated by Sharon Bronson in District 3. A retired educator who served on the Pima Community College Board from 2013 to 2018, Lee holds a master’s degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy. In her letter of interest, she said she does not intend to run for the seat in the 2024 election. She will join the Board at its next meeting on Jan. 9, 2024.
Jail Blue Ribbon Commission releases initial findings
The Pima County Adult Detention Center Blue Ribbon Commission released a draft summary of its findings Dec. 21 and a related online survey Dec. 26. The survey seeks to gather information from the public about overall opinions about the jail and its condition, and solicit feedback about the report’s initial findings. The survey’s results will considered by the Commission as it completes its final report by Jan. 31, 2024.
Supervisors approve Prosperity Initiative
The Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 Dec. 5 to adopt the Prosperity Initiative, a wide-ranging set of policies aimed at reducing generational poverty and increasing individual and community wealth. The policies are the result of more than a year of study and review by a task force that included representatives from several County and City of Tucson departments, all incorporated cities and towns and the Tucson Indian Center.
Introducing the Office of Housing Opportunities and Homeless Solutions
Beginning January 2024, the newly-created Office of Housing Opportunities and Homeless Solutions will facilitate collaborative efforts against homelessness across a range of County departments and community partners. The office will be led by Jennifer Darland, who currently serves as Deputy Director of Housing and Community Resources for the County’s Community and Workforce Development Department, and has a unique background in large-scale program coordination and service delivery for homeless populations.
