Bronson resignation closes a chapter in Pima County history

After 27 years as a Pima County Supervisor, Sharon Bronson’s resignation concludes a historic and consequential career. A Democrat elected in 1996, she is the longest-serving supervisor in the County’s history, and was the first woman ever elected to represent District 3 — a 7,400-square-mile expanse that sprawls from Tucson’s west side to the Yuma county line. The mostly rural district covers 83 percent of Pima County.

Located fewer than 1,000 feet from Interstate-19, in the floodway of the El Vado Wash, sat an empty lot next to New Hope United Methodist Church. Today the roughly three-acre lot has been turned into a green infrastructure, water-harvesting basin that will help support a food forest that focuses on both native plants and the people who have cultivated them for decades.

The average American throws away 25% more trash than usual from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, according to the panel at a special Pima County informational event on Nov. 15. The event, “Rewrapping the Holidays,” was organized by the Green Stewards, the County’s all-volunteer green team.
