Matt Smogor with the County's Regional Flood Control District is passionate about his work maintaining and improving The Chuck Huckelberry Loop. Now, he's telling people about it. Pima County is recruiting people like Smogor who love where they live and love what they do. That's why the County is filming employees on the job who are sharing their stories as part of a social media campaign to recruit future employees.

Green Stewards provide insights
into the world of recycling

Wondering if you can recycle paper towel rolls? Not sure where you can dispose of old paint? Unsure what you should do with those extra plastic bags? If you’ve ever had a question about recycling, the Green Stewards are here to help. Pima County’s own employee green team is hosting the first of a planned series of speaker events on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, called “Recycling: Know Where to Throw,” will feature a forum of three experts on sustainability.

It’s a collaboration between government and private industries to raise awareness about digital security and empower everyone to protect their data from digital forms of crime. Today’s tips are about phishing, the fraudulent practice of sending emails or other messages purporting to be from reputable companies to trick you into revealing personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

Blood drives slated for downtown,
Sheriff's Department later this month

Pima County’s next blood drive will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 17-18, in the basement of the Public Works Building, 201 N. Stone Ave. Meanwhile, the Sheriff's Department will host a separate blood drive at the Clarence W. Dupnik Complex, 1750 E. Benson Highway, on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Schedule an appointment at any time by calling the American Red Cross at 800-733-2767 or by texting “BLOODAPP” to 90999 on your mobile device.

County raises wage threshold
for parking subsidy eligibility

Pima County recently raised the wage threshold for the $15 per pay period parking subsidy received by some employees. The increase follows the recent pay hikes that came as a result of the countywide classification and compensation adjustments, which may have put some employees above the previous threshold of $45,000 per year. Now, any employees making up to $48,500 per year will be eligible for the subsidy. The subsidy change took effect for the pay period that began Sept. 10, which aligned with the classification and compensation adjustments.

Librarian's story: What they left behind
so I could thrive in the United States

Paulina Aguirre-Clinch, a librarian with the Pima County Public Library and a daughter of immigrants, recounts the challenges faced by her parents as they attempted to create a new life for themselves and their children in the United States.

"There is no shame in our parents' struggle," she writes, "they show us what courage, resilience and sacrifice look like."
