'A huge advantage:' County partnership creates pipeline from high school to high-paying jobs
College wasn’t in the cards for Ruben Rivera when he started high school. Then he joined Desert View High School’s iSteam Academy, where students learn about drafting, design and machinery. Now things look different for Rivera, a soon-to-be graduate. Once he turns 18, he’s set for an internship with a space development company. All of this was made possible through Southern Arizona Manufacturing Partners, a collaboration between schools and the local manufacturing industry that’s facilitated by Pima County’s Community and Workforce Development Department.

'New adventures every day:' PEEPs helps offset costs of high-quality preschool
It was a normal day for the preschoolers at Rio Vista Elementary School. They played outside, ate crackers during snack time and jumped rope in PE. The toddlers didn’t realize it, but what they were doing that day was setting them up for success later in life. Each student was a recipient of the Pima Early Education Program Scholarships, a Pima County program for children age 3 to 5 with a high-quality, play-based preschool education at no cost to their families.

'We won the jackpot:' One family's story about fostering kittens from PACC
Bonnie Bazata was a complete failure at fostering cats for Pima Animal Care Center and for that, both PACC and its feline friends are eternally grateful. You, too, can become a “failure” and make a huge difference in the lives of felines and, perhaps, your own. PACC and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona are asking for the community to help save young kittens during what shelter staff call “kitten season.” Learn how to foster, adopt or the myriad other ways to help.

Medical examiner's data dashboards turn facts, figures into usable information
At first glance, the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office’s new online data dashboards may just look like a series of charts and figures. But to one group, the information they provide is invaluable. “It’s been super useful to have the data, and to have it presented in a visual way” said Isabella Fassi with the Colibri Initiative. “I think it’s a lot more powerful.” The initiative is a nonprofit that aims to find answers for the loved ones of migrants who have gone missing while crossing the border of the United States and Mexico.
