Pima County Medical Examiner determines cause of death of former Arizona swimmer Ty Wells

PIMA COUNTY, Feb. 3, 2023 – The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that Ty Wells, a 23-year-old former University of Arizona swimmer, died Jan. 27 in Tucson of natural causes secondary to a disseminated streptococcal bacterial infection following a protracted upper respiratory tract infection.

The results come following a postmortem examination with subsequent laboratory testing.

Wells competed with the Wildcats from 2018 to 2022, specializing in the breaststroke. He earned his bachelor's degree in Health Sciences & Physiology in May 2022.
