Resource Center supplies much more than food, thanks to County investments

Looking at the Sahuarita Food Bank & Community Resource Center today, one can hardly imagine that this impressive, 14,300-square-foot facility got its start 14 years ago in the closet of a church.

The food bank has grown, in part, thanks to contributions from Pima County and the federal government. The County, for its part, donated roughly $800,000 over several years toward the construction of the new facility, which cost a total of about $5 million, according to Penny Pestle, president of the food bank’s board of directors.

Agua Nueva tour

Agua Nueva facility holds many surprises for visitors

It's a brisk afternoon at Pima County’s Agua Nueva Water Reclamation Facility, and the first stop on the tour is the gift shop. 

It's not really a gift shop, of course. That's just what they like to call the headworks building, where rocks, sticks and other materials that can't be processed are removed from incoming sewage and sent to the landfill.

Bruce Anderson

Medical Examiner’s Office gets help with cold cases

The County Medical Examiner’s Office is working with a nonprofit organization to try to put names to human remains, some of which have remained unidentified for 50 years.

Dr. Bruce Anderson, a forensic anthropologist with the office, has worked for several years with the DNA Doe Project, which brings together law enforcement agencies and medical examiners across North America to solve their most difficult cases. Now Anderson is working with the Cold Case Initiative on two new cases.

PACC staff

PACC thanks public
for its support during
recent outbreak

The Pima Animal Care Center is again open to the public, prompting shelter leadership to share their gratitude to the community for their patience during the Strep zoo outbreak that occurred earlier this month at the shelter.

PACC was forced to shut down from Jan. 17 to 23 after several dogs tested positive for Strep zoo, a serious bacterial infection. However, the community continued to support the shelter.

ReadBlack book club
is back for 2023

The monthly book club #ReadBlack is gearing up for 2023 with another lineup of entertaining and thought-provoking books! The program is hosted by members of the Library's Kindred Team.

The club runs the fourth Saturday of every month from 1 to 3 p.m. It is held virtually via Zoom and requires advance registration.
