Pima County’s annual grease collection day set for Jan. 14

PIMA COUNTY, January 12, 2023 – The holiday season may be over, but in Pima County, there’s one final post-holiday event to look forward to—and it doesn’t require any cooking, wrapping or shopping.

It’s the 18th annual Grease Collection and Recycling Event, scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 14. You can drop off used cooking grease, oils or fats at five collection sites around Pima County that day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is held every year by the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department in coordination with Grecycle, Jacobs Engineering, Pima Community College, O’Rielly Chevrolet and the Town of Sahuarita.

The event is designed to encourage people to save their grease to help ensure that it stays out of the sanitary sewer system, said Steve King, permit and regulatory compliance officer at RWRD.

“When you let grease go down your drain, it tends to lead to clogged pipes and backed-up sewer lines,” he said. “It can also attract pests to your pipes.”

Grecycle, a locally owned company, will recycle the collected grease into clean-burning biodiesel fuel. The event has brought in more than 82,000 pounds of grease since it began in 2005.

The locations are:

  • O’Rielly Chevrolet, 6160 E. Broadway Blvd.
  • Pima Community College, West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road
  • Pima Community College, Northwest Campus, 7600 N. Shannon Road
  • Pima Community College, Desert Vista Campus, 5901 S. Calle Santa Cruz
  • Sahuarita Town Hall Complex, 375 W. Sahuarita Center Way

“We encourage anyone who has leftover grease to drop it off,” King said. “Every little bit helps.”
