Our workforce of more than 7,000 Pima County employees goes to work every day to serve you, 1 million county residents and hundreds of thousands of visitors. Here is a glimpse of all we do for our friends, neighbors and visitors. Larry Wollam

Acclaimed artist celebrates half a century sharing his craft

“I’m a photo realist,” says artist Larry Wollam. “I’m serious, and I want my students to be serious about art.”

It’s that mindset that has inspired Wollam to share his love of art over the last half-century with students enrolled in Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation’s Arts & Leisure Class Program. Staff, volunteers and former students celebrated his 50-year milestone at a reception at NRPR’s main offices Dec. 8.

Save your cooking grease for Jan. 14 collection event

When you’re preparing this year’s holiday meals, it might be tempting to pour excess grease down the drain. But that’s a sure-fire recipe for clogged pipes and backed-up drains. Fortunately, there’s a green-friendly alternative. Next month, you’ll be able to drop it off at the 18th annual Grease Collection and Recycling Event on Saturday, Jan. 14, at five locations across Tucson.

Health Department offers breastfeeding support through WIC program

Welcoming a new baby into your family comes with plenty of challenges and questions. To help with one of these challenges, the Pima County Health Department’s WIC program offers the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program to provide support to new parents.

Two county programs aim
to reduce vehicle idling

We’ve all done it. You’re waiting in the drive-through for a meal or for the kids to come scurrying out of school and you leave your car running … and running … and running.

Those idling vehicles result in zero miles per gallon; wasted money on high-priced fuel; additional wear and tear on your vehicle; and unnecessary air pollution and climate change emissions into our environment.

The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality offers two programs designed to educate the public to stop vehicle idling near schools and businesses.

Salude Arte

Program is seeking paid collaborators
for public art projects

SaludArte, a public art program sponsored by the Pima County Health Department, is seeking community members to provide input on five public art projects in 2023. The program aims to express, through art, the impact of COVID-19 on Pima County’s most vulnerable communities. Participants will be required to attend a series of community meetings and will be paid $100 per meeting. They don’t need to have an artistic background or expertise to take part in the program.

Today is deadline to apply
for Precinct 1 constable post

Anyone who lives in Justice Precinct 1 and wishes to apply for the precinct’s vacant constable position must submit an application by 5 p.m. today. The precinct stretches from Oro Valley in the north to the Catalina Foothills and Tucson's northeast side.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors will make the appointment to fill the vacancy at its next meeting on Jan. 10. The individual appointed will serve through December 31, 2024.

Some longtime PACC residents find homes
for the holidays

With the holidays just around the corner, the Pima Animal Care Center is celebrating the successful adoption of several dogs and cats that were long-term residents at the shelter. These long-timers (like Jethro, at left) will be spending their holidays in a home. Despite these success stories, there are still more than 550 dogs and 90 cats waiting to find their new families.
