Bike Ambassadors help keep Pima County trails safe

A cadre of bike ambassadors is working with Pima County to promote proper safety and etiquette on trails throughout southern Arizona.

The program, organized by nonprofit Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists, is made up entirely of volunteers.

Tucson Mountain Park restoration projects protect animals and people

Exploring the trails and nearby sites in Tucson Mountain Park entails a certain amount of risk: a twisted ankle, a mild sunburn. But a fall down a 20-foot mine shaft?

Not on Brian Powell’s watch.

Powell, parks superintendent for Pima County’s Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation (NRPR) Department, has been working with staff to map dangerous pit mines in Tucson Mountain Park, and recently took action to fill one near the Robles Pass Trail System.

Celebrate World Car-Free Day Sept. 22

Give vehicles the day off on World Car-Free Day Thursday, Sept. 22. Try a different way to get to work with a fun bike ride or walk, or take a free ride on public transit.

The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) Clean Air Program will celebrate the day on the University of Arizona Mall in front of the Student Union. Commuters who use alternate modes of transportation can join in the fun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More than 1,000 pets find homes during ‘Clear the Shelters’ promotion

Pima Animal Care Center wrapped up its monthlong “Clear the Shelters” promotion last week with 1,015 adoptions.

“We asked for help and the community really stepped up,” said Monica Dangler, Director of Animal Services. “We were thrilled to send so many incredible animals home, including long-stay dogs like Charley (pictured), who was at the shelter for over a year before being adopted.”
