Our hands come into contact with many items throughout the day and become infested with a variety of bacteria and germs. Some of these germs and bacteria can cause disease and are one of the largest reasons we want to avoid touching food that is ready-to-eat.

How to submit a variance for outdoor cooking

Every summer we inspect facilities that want to utilize Pima County’s warm weather to smoke brisket, roast green chilies or barbecue outside of their permitted kitchens. This is not allowed per the FDA Food Code; however, you may submit a variance request with Consumer Health and Food Safety. Previously, the variance request had to be printed and filled out from our office but there are new additions to the county website to help make the process simpler.

FDA Risk Factor Study

Pima County’s Consumer Health and Food Safety division will be working over the next three years with the Food and Drug Administration on a study of risk factors within the retail food industry.

The Pima County Health Department has learned of recent outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses associated with splash pads around the country. It is our goal to work with you to reduce and prevent waterborne illnesses in aquatic facilities within Pima County.

Consumer Health & Food Safety launched a Facebook group Aug. 19 to keep our permitted facilities updated and informed of current public health and safety recommendations and requirements. The social media platform also will keep members up to date on other information as it emerges, such as recalls or outbreaks. In order to best serve you and the businesses we regulate this Facebook group will function as a private group, open only to individuals that operate a business that is permitted by our division.

We are always seeking to improve our communication methods and ensure information is accessible and quickly delivered to constituents. Help us spread the word by sharing the link to our Facebook group page. We are looking forward to connecting and partnering with you!
