Frequent rider on The Loop helped to get wheels turning for creation of Women's Tour de France
Former professional cyclist and activist Kathryn Bertine launched a campaign for a Women’s Tour de France from her home in Tucson nine years ago by sending a petition to ASO, the company that organizes the men’s Tour de France. This year, the dream becomes real. On July 24, Le Tour de France Femmes begins in Paris.
Health Department project seeks to end stigma over race, drug-use treatment
The Pima County Health Department is looking for people who have been impacted by the long-term effects of both racial injustice and drug use. In 2020, American Indians/Alaska Natives and Black residents were 60% more likely to die from a drug overdose than White, non-Hispanic residents in Pima County. Stigma makes it hard for many of these individuals to get the help they need.
Participants would:
- Attend six meetings to share their stories;
- Help guide the design of an educational campaign to address stigma and racial injustice around drug use and treatment; and
- Help bring more respect to our community and save lives!
You, your voice, and your story matter. Help end stigma by sharing your or your loved ones’ experiences with racial injustice and overdose. Your time and commitment will be compensated. Space is limited. Click on the link below to sign up or learn more.

Act now if you need mail-in ballot for primary
Today, July 22, is the last day to request an early ballot by mail for the Aug. 2 primary election. Call 520-724-4330 to request your primary ballot, or go to www.recorder.pima.gov.
Next Tuesday, July 26, is the last safe day to mail your ballot in time for it to be counted in the primary. If you still have your early ballot after July 26, you should not put it in the mail. Instead, drop it off at an early voting site. Go to www.pima.gov/vote2022 for a list of drop-off locations. Or you can drop it off on Election Day at any of the County’s 129 vote centers. A map and list of those locations can be found at the same link.
REMINDER: All early ballots MUST be in the hands of the Recorder's Office by 7 p.m., Aug. 2, when polls close. Any ballot delivered to the Recorder by the postal service after 7 p.m. WILL NOT be counted due to state law. It doesn’t matter when the ballot was postmarked.

Bookbikes, seed library mark 10 years of service
The bookbike and seed library programs are celebrating 10 years of existence. Both of these programs were established in 2012 and continue to be very popular. The library has three bookbikes that go to community events to distribute free books, library cards and information about library programs and services. Bike ambassadors also go on monthly visits to farmers markets and neighborhood centers. The seed library is a collection of open-pollinated and heirloom seeds that you can borrow from to plant at home. There is no requirement to return seeds, but some of our savvy local growers are able to save seeds and the library welcomes donations.
