PACC offers $0 adoption fees for all pets

PIMA COUNTY, Sept. 3, 2021 – Pima Animal Care Center has seen an increase in pets coming to the shelter, as well as people needing help to keep their pets. In hopes of preventing shelter overcrowding, PACC is offering free adoptions on all pets in the shelter now through Sept. 19 for Clear the Shelters. This includes puppies and kittens. There is a $20 licensing fee per adopted dog. The $50 reserve fees will not be waived.

“We’ve just started seeing the long-term impact that COVID has had on our community which created space issues in the shelter,” said Monica Dangler, Director of Animal Services. “The last two week our community has really stepped up adopting and fostering. We are hoping to continue that momentum for the next several weeks.”

The lack of space is due to a variety of reasons, including healthy strays being brought directly to the shelter when found, an increase in calls to Pet Support, dogs that prefer to be solo in the kennel, and an influx of animals that are part of Animal Protection Services investigations.

HOW TO HELP PACC

ADOPT: The shelter is currently experiencing an influx of large dogs and needs adopters and fosters for those pets. If you don’t find the type of pet you are looking for at PACC, check other local rescues and shelters, look at rehoming sites, or visit Facebook rehoming groups like Re-Home Arizona Pets and Keep Them Out of Shelters.

There will be several opportunities to meet foster pets and some of PACC’s long-stay pets. The shelter will be holding these four events in the Multipurpose Room:

Long Stay Lounge on Sept. 4 and Sept. 5, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Foster Fair Sept. 12, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“Clear the Shelters” will end with a Party at PACC on Sept. 19. There will be giveaways, food trucks such as Cookie Addicts, and much more. Prizes will include cat trees, kennels, toys, treats, etc.

HANG ONTO STRAY PETS: Hold onto healthy, friendly stray dogs and look for the owner instead of bringing to the shelter. Finders can get a list of resources by texting the word “FOUND” to
LOST PETS: Upload your pet’s photo to petcolove.org. Be sure to visit the shelter every day to look for your pet.

SAFETY NET FOSTER: Provide temporary housing for pets whose families are in crisis. Sign up at gov/foster.

If you need help keeping your pets, rehoming your pet, or short-term pet housing, please contact our Pet Support Center at pima.gov/petsupport. “Being a lifesaving community isn’t a destination, but a journey, and Pima County has shown their commitment time and time again,” Dangler said. “There is no way we could save as many lives as we do without your continued support.”

Pima Animal Care Center is open Monday to Friday, noon to 7 p.m., and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. To see a list of available pets and services, head to pima.gov/animalcare.
