Small Business Commission announces winners of the Small Business of the Year Awards

PIMA COUNTY, Oct. 23, 2019 - The Pima County Small Business Commission proudly announces the winners of the Small Business of the Year Awards.

The 2019 Small Business of the Year Awards winners are:

  • Rural Award: Westgate Garden Design, LLC – a home-based business in Green Valley that provides sustainable landscape design and professional rainwater harvesting services. This dynamic one-woman small business saw its profits grow 490 percent in one year, is deeply involved in community service and maintains strong relations with a broad network of subcontractors in Pima County.
  • Urban Award: Cabling Solutions Group – a Tucson-based IT and network cabling company with 12 employees that has been in business for six years. The small business prides itself on its employee engagement and extensive community involvement that includes providing work free of charge to charities and non-profits. The company is a homegrown success story developed with no funding assistance or outside investors.
  • Nonprofit: (No award presented this year at the Commission’s discretion)

Award winners will be recognized during a Pima County Board of Supervisors meeting in November. Each winner will receive a $500 prize and a plaque.

The Pima County Small Business Commission presents the awards each year to small businesses who stand out in the community. The applicants were assessed on criteria such as company culture, positive impact on Pima County and community involvement.

Past winners of the Small Business of the Year Award:

  • 2017-2018 combined: Rural Award – Miura Contracting; Urban Award – Kool Air Manufacturing, LLC; Non-Profit Award – Pima Community College Small Business Development Center
  • 2016: Rural Award – Vistoso Automotive Repair; Urban Award – Plum Windows and Doors
  • 2015: Rural Award – Bling by Design; Urban Award – Aztera, LLC
  • 2014: Rural Award - Golden Goose Thrift Store in Catalina; Urban Award - The Planning Center
  • 2013: Rural Award - Ajo Transportation; Urban Award - Casa de los Niño’s Thrift store
  • 2012: Joint Technical Education District
  • 2011: Gasoline Alley, an automobile repair and restoration business in Green Valley
  • 2010: Microbusiness Advancement Center
