Sewer work will mean closure along Pantano

The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department and its contractor, B&F Contracting Inc., have begun activities related to a cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP) and manhole rehabilitation project in an area bordered by Broadway Boulevard to the south, Speedway Boulevard to the north, Pantano Road to the east and Kolb Road to the west. The repairs are necessary as the sewer pipes in the area are nearly 50 years old and approaching the end of their useful life. This project is expected to be complete by the end of November2019.

Beginning Oct. 4, motorists and users of the Chuck Huckelberry Loop can expect the following:

  • Intermittent closures to the Speedway Boulevard south access ramps to the Loop, as well as the south sidewalk over the bridge will be in effect Oct. 4 and 5. By Oct. 6, the ramps will be fully closed for several weeks.
  • Through traffic on the Loop should cross the Pantano Wash using the Tanque Verde or Sabino Canyon bridges.
  • The Loop will maintain regular operating hours (dawn to dusk) and remain open during construction. Bicyclists are asked to walk their bikes in the area. All users of the Loop should heed message boards, signage and flaggers, and exercise caution around temporary bypass pipes located on the eastern edge of the Loop path and in the gravel.
  • Pipe fusion for the Broadway Boulevard section will begin Oct. 9 in a location off the road. This will not impact road traffic. There will, however, be Loop impacts on the north side of Broadway.

Intermittent Road Restrictions on Speedway Boulevard:

  • Eastbound Speedway: There will be a double lane closure on eastbound Speedway Boulevard at the Pantano Wash on Oct. 5 and 6. Beginning Oct. 6, the right eastbound lane on Speedway will be closed for several weeks.
  • Westbound Speedway: Signage and traffic control measures are in place on westbound Speedway in the vicinity of the Speedway Bridge and the Pantano Wash. There will be a right turn bay closure into Lowe’s on 10-5 as crews access a manhole in the road. There will also be a left westbound lane closure for pump set-up. Motorists will see pumps in the median and in the street.
  • Effective Oct. 6, eastbound and westbound lane closures will be in effect 24 hours per day during construction. Motorists should expect minor traffic delays.

Updates on this project will be provided regularly to announce construction activities and road restrictions as the project progresses. Traffic restrictions will be communicated to the public via television news and social media sites including www.facebook.com/wastewaterreclamation and www.nextdoor.com.
