August is where the summer lingers a little longer, reminding us to be mindful of extreme heat and the signs of heat-related exhaustion.
Visit mesaaz.gov/heatsafety to learn what resources are available to you. From cooling centers to hydration stations and many other heat safety assistance resources, this is the webpage you’ll want to bookmark this season.
Make sure your A/C unit works well. Your house can heat up quickly without air conditioning and reach unsafe temperatures. Check your unit and change your filters.
Donate to the 19th Annual Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign. From May 5 through September 30, this effort provides supplies of water to people in need. We work with nonprofit agencies and businesses to collect the bottles of water which are distributed through United Food Bank to numerous agencies in the valley, including A New Leaf, Paz de Cristo and Mesa United Way. You can donate water bottles or cash to help us provide this life-saving service.

Pet Summer Safety
Leave your animals at home. Never leave your pet in a vehicle during the summer. Temperatures inside a vehicle increase by 20 degrees in 10 minutes, even with cracked windows. Call 911 if you see an animal locked in a vehicle.
Better inside. Your pet needs constant access to water and shade. Shady spots offer little protection from the heat and move with the sun. It's better to keep them inside an air-conditioned space if you can.
Find a summer walk schedule. If it's too hot to stand barefoot for five seconds on the path, it's too hot to walk your dog. Paws burn easily on hot surfaces. Don't risk it; walk them later!

How Homes Really Burn in a Wildfire: It's Not Always a Wall of Flames
In the Sonoran Desert, homes are often lost to wind-blown embers, not flames. Embers can land in dry plants, vents, or flammable landscaping and start fires next to the home. Simple steps like clearing vegetation, adding ember screens, and replacing wood mulch can reduce the risk. If your neighborhood borders desert or open space, it may qualify for Firewise USA® recognition. Our Wildfire Mitigation Team can help your HOA get started. Click here for more information.
