As temperatures reach triple digits, remember these tips to help you prepare and stay safe:
Make sure your A/C unit works well. Your house can heat up quickly without air conditioning and reach unsafe temperatures. Check your unit and change your filters.
Watch the Resident’s Guide to Heat Safety video and share it with others. Learn how to identify signs of heat-related illnesses and how to keep pets and people in your home safe from the heat.
Visit mesaaz.gov/heatsafety to learn what resources are available to you. From cooling centers to hydration stations and many other heat safety assistance resources, this is the webpage you’ll want to bookmark this season.
Make a Heat Safety Plan with your family. What would you do if your A/C goes out in the middle of July? Take a moment to plan for contingencies by locating air-conditioned spaces near your house and exchanging phone numbers with neighbors so that you can check on each other. Donate to the 19th Annual Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign. From May 5 through September 30, this effort provides supplies of water to people in need. We work with nonprofit agencies and businesses to collect the bottles of water which are distributed through United Food Bank to numerous agencies in the valley, including A New Leaf, Paz de Cristo and Mesa United Way. You can donate water bottles or cash to help us provide this life-saving service.

Pet Summer Safety
Leave your animals at home. Never leave your pet in a car during the summer. Temperatures inside a car increase by 20 degrees in 10 minutes, even with cracked windows. Call 911 if you see an animal locked in a vehicle.
Better inside. Your pet needs constant access to water and shade. Shady spots offer little protection from the heat and move with the sun. It's better to keep them inside an air-conditioned space if you can.
Find a summer walk schedule. If it's too hot to stand barefoot for five seconds on the path, it's too hot to walk your dog. Paws burn easily on hot surfaces. Don't risk it; walk them later!
Fireworks Safety. Fireworks may be fun for us, but they can terrify pets. Mesa Animal Control urges pet owners to keep animals indoors with calming noise, ID tags or microchips updated, and never bring them to fireworks shows. Crate pets if they’re used to it, and never leave them in hot cars. If your pet goes missing, visit maricopa.gov/162/Lost-Found-Pet or call 602-506-7387. Found a pet? Call Mesa Animal Control at 480-644-2268. Fireworks are legal on private property June 24–July 6 with permission—but aerials, firecrackers, and bottle rockets are not.
