New Human Services Director
The leadership team is pleased to announce Tamara Bridwell as the new Director of the Maricopa County Department of Human Services.
Tamara is a dedicated public servant with more than 15 years of experience in both local and federal government. Tamara brings a strong background in leading community-focused programs that drive meaningful outcomes for individuals and families. She began her career as a Presidential Management Fellow at the Department of Veterans Affairs, where she successfully launched the Supportive Services for Veterans Families program. In this role, Tamara managed over $60 million in federal grants aimed at preventing and ending veteran homelessness.
As a Senior Regional Advisor for the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, she provided strategic guidance to ten states on leveraging data and evidence to enhance the effectiveness of federal and local grants, focusing on increasing housing placements and minimizing inflow into homelessness systems.
Recognized for her impactful work, Tamara is a proud recipient of the Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University. Her passion for service and thoughtful leadership style make her a tremendous asset to both the department and residents of Maricopa County.

Jayson Matthews demonstrated outstanding leadership while serving as Interim Director over the past several months. His steady guidance and deep knowledge of the department have been instrumental during this time of transition.
Jayson will continue to play a key part in the department’s leadership. He will now step into the role of Interim Deputy Director, where he will support Tamara and help ensure a smooth and successful transition.
