Colleagues,
On this Employee Appreciation Day, I want to start by sharing how grateful I am to serve the nation’s 4th largest and fastest-growing county with you. I know there are some days that it’s tougher than others to put on the scrubs at the jail or get behind the wheel of a road paver or stare at a spreadsheet to balance a budget or any of the countless important jobs here at Maricopa County. But you show up every day because you care about this community. You care about making it better. You want to do what’s right even if it’s hard. That’s inspiring to me.
I also appreciate those of you who participated in our 2024 Employee Experience Survey. I’ve had a chance to review the results and wanted to share a few highlights with you.
First, we had a 65% participation rate, which is excellent. That number gives me confidence that we got a representative sampling of employees across departments, demographics, work locations, and job types.
We asked about your overall experience—are you satisfied with your job? Do you feel supported at the office and in your overall wellbeing?
92% of you said you are satisfied with Maricopa County as your employer.
83% said you get the health and wellness resources you need.
78% said you feel like your department supports your overall wellbeing.
Those are really encouraging numbers.
We also read your comments.
Many of you appreciate the opportunity to do meaningful work with colleagues who care just as much as you do.
Some mentioned career development opportunities—not only the 1000+ courses we offer through Workday—but additional training you’d like to see.
A lot of you noted our benefits—things like paid parental leave, discounted childcare, an on-site fitness center, wellness programs catered to specific health challenges such as diabetes, free counseling sessions and mental health support, and, of course, flexible work schedules and remote working options that provide the work-life balance you desire.
Just as important, we took note of the criticisms, the areas for improvement, the barriers you see to success and satisfaction.
Right now, we’re analyzing survey answers and comments at the department level. Your directors will have more detailed information to share in the coming weeks.
I’m aware that your job with Maricopa County doesn’t exist in a bubble. It’s informed and influenced by what happens the rest of the day. And so, as county manager, I’ve tried to look not just at how we treat employees on the job but in all parts of their life.
This is basic human care. And the peace of mind it brings, hopefully, allows you to bring your best to your role as a public servant.
Your Employee Experience Survey feedback will make this an even better place to work.
Thank you again for all you do.
Be well,
Jen
