Colleagues,
Two years ago, Maricopa County became one of the largest government employers in Arizona to offer paid parental leave for employees. We did so because we believe in supporting the whole employee, and so much of what matters in life happens outside of work hours. Yesterday, with unanimous support from the Board of Supervisors, we expanded our paid parental leave program so more parents are eligible for this benefit.
The 2022 policy allowed up to six weeks of leave for either parent, so long as they’d been on the payroll 12 months prior to the birth or adoption of a child. The new policy approved by the Board yesterday expands eligibility to any new mom or dad who has served the county for a full year, even if the birth or adoption of their child happened within the first 12 months of their employment. New parents can use this benefit up to one year from the birth or adoption, and the 240 hours of leave can be used a little at a time or all at once. And more good news – employees who weren’t eligible for this benefit in the past 12 months because they did not have a year of service before the child was born or adopted, will now be eligible to use the leave for up to 12 months after the event occurs.
I appreciate the Board’s continued support of our workforce as they balance public service and family life.
If you have any questions about our paid parental leave policy, I encourage you to speak with your manager or HR representative.
Be well,
Jen
