Colleagues,

A few hours ago, the Board of Supervisors approved funding for the initial phases of a project designed to provide an affordable childcare option to county employees.  The Board’s action today is the first step in what will likely be an 18- to 24-month process of renovating County-owned space near the Administration Building downtown for the sole purpose of Early Childhood Education and Child Care.  I’m grateful to the Board for their continued support of our workforce.

I’m also grateful to everyone who completed our survey about current and future childcare needs.  What we learned from the nearly 2,100 people who responded was that a large majority view affordable, on-site childcare for kids ages 5 and under as “very positive” for our organization.  40% feel the downtown Phoenix location is either extremely or very convenient.  Most importantly, our survey indicates we have more than enough interest to fill a center in the space that is available.

So with today’s vote, the project is continuing forward.  As you know, designing and building things takes time.  I will update you on key milestones as we work toward opening the center sometime in 2024.

Be well,

Joy
