March 4, 2020

Dear oneMCSO,

Early this morning, while performing duties, MCSO Detention Transportation Officer Martin Freeman A8306 was assaulted by inmate Johann Benson.

Officer Freeman transported inmate Benson from the Lower Buckeye Jail to the Department of Corrections Alhambra Facility located at 2500 East Van Buren Street in Phoenix. Upon arriving at the Sally Port Intake area Benson was turned over to DOC Officers. During the exchange process 3 inmates, 5 DOC Officers, one DOC K9, and Officer Freeman, were present when inmate Benson assaulted Officer Freeman by striking him in the face. While defending himself, Officer Freeman fell to the ground hitting his head. As a result of the attack, Officer Freeman suffered a serious head injury requiring transport to a local hospital. Freeman remains hospitalized in serious condition. Inmate Benson remains in the custody of the Arizona Department of Corrections pending investigation results.

Please keep Officer Freeman and his family in your thoughts and prayers. We will continue to update you as appropriate.

MCSO staff will be assigned to support Officer Freeman and his family as he recovers from his injury.

Stay vigilant, stay safe.
Sheriff Paul Penzone
