ECR Juvenile
The Clerk’s Office is expanding the Electronic Court Record (ECR) to Juvenile cases.  The first step toward a Juvenile ECR will involve scanning newly-filed cases and subsequent filings in established cases.

Scanning will be implemented in four phases: Phase I will be Guardianship of Minor cases (JG case type); Phase II will be in seven case types: Adoption Certification (AC), Adoptions (JA), Severance of Parental Rights (JS), Relinquishment of Parental Rights (JI and JR), Emancipation (JE) and Protective Orders (JP); Phase III will be in Dependency cases (JD) and will include electronically transmitting juvenile cases on appeal via the Court to Court (C2C) application; and the final phase will include Delinquency cases (JV).

Paper documents will be scanned day-forward as each case type is implemented. Back-scanning will take place for cases on appeal. Once scanning begins in each phase, paper files will not be created and no paper documents will be placed in existing paper case files; the electronic record will become the official record. Public documents from juvenile cases will be accessible via public access terminals located at the juvenile facilities in Phoenix and Mesa.

NACo Recognition
The Clerk’s Office earned three awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo). Programs from around the country with a proven track record of improving service and efficiency in county government are submitted to a panel for review and consideration. This year, three of the Clerk’s initiatives were recognized with NACo awards. The winning programs have been covered by The Brief in the past and are: C2C, the Court-to-Court system for transmitting the record on appeal to Arizona’s appellate courts electronically; ECR Online, the Electronic Court Record Online that allows parties to a case and their attorneys to view documents remotely; and Mandatory eFiling, for the Clerk’s part in Arizona’s move toward statewide eFiling.

The Brief’s New Look
This is the first issue of The Brief in its new format. Rather than a PDF attachment to open, The Brief will arrive in the body of the email you receive each month. We hope you like the new look!

If spam filters are a concern, note that the “From” line of the email will read “Maricopa County” or “Clerk of the Superior Court” next to a general email address of “maricopacounty@service.govdelivery.com.” Add The Brief to your “safe senders” list to ensure delivery. If your computer settings don’t allow for images within emails to download, each issue will also contain a link to view The Brief as a web page.

Law firm administrators may want to modify how their firm receives The Brief. Currently, one issue is sent to a designated email address and the law firm distributes each month’s issue internally. Each member of the firm can now create and manage a profile which only takes about a minute. This is an option that allows individuals to add or remove their contact information from The Brief’s distribution list. See the links and information at the bottom of this issue for more details. To identify whether you receive The Brief directly from the Clerk’s Office or from within your law firm or another source, the footer of each issue will display the email address to which the issue was originally sent.
