A Statement from Supervisor Gallardo on the passing of Greater Phoenix Urban League CEO, George Dean
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend George Dean, longtime President and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Urban League and a dedicated champion for civil rights, equality and opportunity.
For more than three decades, George was a powerful and respected voice for Arizona’s African American community. Through his leadership, he expanded opportunities in education, employment, housing, homeownership and economic empowerment, while always advocating for justice and stronger communities.
I had the privilege of partnering with George on several initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for South Phoenix residents. I will always cherish the memories I have of working on a youth summer workforce development program together.
Arizona has lost a true community leader and civil rights champion. George leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of service that will continue through the countless lives he touched.
My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and the entire Greater Phoenix Urban League family."
