Supervisor's Message

Despite the summer heat, your D3 Team and Maricopa County officials have been very busy. From elections to eviction prevention, from disease-carrying mosquitos to determining the future of our County waste transfer stations, here’s a brief summary:

County Updates

As Chair of the Board, one of my main priorities is to ensure Maricopa County residents and families living paycheck to paycheck can remain in their homes. In many instances these individuals are one accident or emergency away from falling behind on rent and potentially becoming homeless. In January, I joined my colleague, Supervisor Steve Gallardo and we launched an Eviction Diversion Pilot Program, funded by one-time county dollars. We partnered with the Arizona Multihousing Association with the goal of providing residents with case management and rental assistance, avoiding the inevitable late fees and court costs that almost always results in eviction. The City of Phoenix is working with us to provide utility assistance and the case management support. We will be evaluating results to measure the long-term success of this pilot and what that means for future iterations of this program.

Waste Transfer Station Update

As many of you know, the future of the County’s six waste transfer stations is under review. When the possibility of closure was raised, I heard clearly from residents in our community how important the Cave Creek Waste Transfer Station is and how heavily it is used.

I want to help. My priority is to keep the Cave Creek Transfer Station open and this service available to the residents who rely on it. I am committed to exploring reasonable options to accomplish that.

Throughout this process, I have received hundreds of comments from concerned residents who regularly use this waste transfer station, and there was a commonly shared sentiment: keep it open, even if it means increasing costs. I want to emphasize that if the waste transfer stations are to remain open, which is my priority, the cost to use the stations will increase.

Your continued input is important as the county works through these options to determine the best path forward.

The message from our community has been clear: the Cave Creek Waste Transfer Station is a highly valued and well-used service. I share the community’s desire to keep it open, and I will continue working toward a solution that does just that.

Staying Safe in the Heat

Monsoon rainfall creates standing pools of water. In turn, mosquito presence increases, including those that carry deadly diseases such as West Nile Virus. District Highlights

District 3 communities have multiple events every month. Here are a few my team checked out.

Bell Road Business Alliance

Your D3 Community Liaison Ben Flores dropped by the Bell Road Business Alliance meeting. The Alliance convenes local business owners and the Black Mountain Precinct to discuss community events and safety updates. This past month, the Alliance recognized Greg Freeman for his exemplary leadership over the past several years.

Mountain View Precinct – Phoenix Neighborhood Patrol (PNP)

The Mountain View Precinct hosts training events for neighborhood leaders every month, with great speakers. D3’s Community Liaison Ben Flores attended the July meeting. PNP leaders heard from Silent Witness Executive Director Johnny Martinez. He spoke about the nonprofit’s anonymous crime reporting system, and how to get involved. Thank you to the Mountain View Precinct for hosting these meetings for our leaders.

Taiwanese Delegation: Visit to Maricopa County

I was honored to host my long-time dear friend, Lin Ling Lee, who brought a delegation from Taiwan and several TSMC families to visit our Maricopa County offices. Taipei and Phoenix have been sister cities for 47 years! I am proud to play a part in nurturing this beautiful relationship. Thank you to our Maricopa County staff for helping to welcome these esteemed guests.

East Sunnyslope Community

The East Sunnyslope Community has been working hard throughout the hot Phoenix summer. We are grateful for the work that President Jeff Tisot and his team do to keep their community safe and up to date on current events. As always, Desert Horizon Precinct officers and Phoenix Neighborhood Services attended, reported out and answered questions from the neighbors.

County Events

As Board Chair I am privileged to travel the County and meet and recognize so many outstanding Maricopa County staff!

Elections Staff

During the Primary Election, I visited MCTEC and got a behind-the-curtains look at all that our staff and volunteers do to ensure smooth elections. Following up on a successful election, I was so happy to return to MCTEC and thank the whole team for a job well done, and to wish them a great General Election.

MCDOT All-Hands Meeting

I was pleased to help kick off the All-Hands Meeting for our Maricopa County Department of Transportation team. The team does great work across the County.

Air Quality Visit

We toured the Office of Air Quality where I met so many engineers and saw first hand the work they do on behalf of our residents. This department is nationally known for their work on air quality issues.

Clerk's Office Visit

We took a moment to thank the Clerk’s Office for their work. I got to view early, handwritten Board records – the Clerk’s Office does a great job maintaining those archives! We thanked the office for helping so many of our constituents with their requests, and for their ongoing work to ensure organized meetings with appropriate follow-up. Again, thank you to these dedicated employees.

Maricopa County Rising Stars

The Maricopa County Rising Stars Award is presented to staff who show strong leadership and a passion for public service. Congratulations to Alison, Caroline, Robert, Sydney, Ryan R., and Ryan H. on receiving this award. Thank you for making Maricopa County even better.

Last, But Certainly Not Least, the League of Cities and Towns

The League of Arizona Cities and Towns Conference is where local governments come together and learn from each other on how to best serve residents and how to improve as leaders. I had the opportunity to participate with distinguished women on the Women’s Leadership Panel. We were able to share our experiences on what led us to where we are today. It was inspiring to hear their stories!
