 On August 3, I had the pleasure of joining the Maricopa County Library District and the City of Litchfield Park to celebrate the opening of the new Litchfield Park Library. This modern, 10,000-square-foot library expands access to resources, technology, and community gathering spaces and is located in the La Loma Homestead redevelopment.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 4, allocated $5 million in Community Solutions Funding to help cover a portion of the construction costs.

Raising the Flag for the Coast Guard's 236th Anniversary
 I recently attended the City of Litchfield Park's Flag Raising Ceremony where we all celebrated the U.S. Coast Guard's 236th anniversary.
I am grateful for the Coast Guard's service and deeply appreciative of the sacrifices they have made on behalf of the American people.
West Valley Mayors Meeting
 On August 11, I attended the West Valley Mayors’ and Managers’ meeting in Goodyear. It was a great opportunity to connect with leaders from across the West Valley and hear about the important work taking place in their communities. I also appreciated the opportunity to share some of the great work we are doing here in Maricopa County.
Posses of Sun City West
 I had the pleasure of being a guest speaker at the Posses of Sun City West monthly meeting. I want to express my sincere appreciation for all they do. Their commitment to serving and protecting their community does not go unnoticed, and I am truly grateful for their service.
Team Lesko Out in the Community
 Team Lesko had a busy month welcoming and celebrating new businesses throughout District 4. Congratulations to each of these businesses on this exciting milestone. I wish you continued growth and great success in the years ahead.

Primary Elections
 On August 3, I was proud to approve the results for the 2026 Primary Election. With 99.6% of results reported within 27 hours, this election was one of the most successful in Maricopa County's history. Thank you to all the staff!

New Enhanced Pedestrian Crossing at 111th Ave and Connecticut Ave
 The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has installed an enhanced pedestrian crossing and upgraded the existing Americans with Disabilities (ADA) ramps to current federal standards at the intersection of 111th and Connecticut avenues in Sun City.
The new pedestrian crossing is expected to be activated on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, and features a warning device that uses high-intensity, rapidly flashing yellow LED lights to alert drivers that a pedestrian is crossing or is about to cross the roadway.
Roadway Improvements on Wintersburg Road
Begininng on August 17th, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will implement roadway improvements on Wintersburg Road
from Van Buren Street to Salome Highway. This project will improve traffic flow by installing a new passing lane and enhance driver awareness by installing centerline rumble strips within the project limits.
All work will be performed within MCDOT right-of-way. Access to properties will be maintained at all times. Drivers can anticipate restrictions in the
area while work is underway. Please allow extra time for travel, watch for crews and observe reduced speeds in the project area.
Work Schedule:
Where: Wintersburg Road from Van Buren Street to Salome Highway.
When: Aug. 17, 2026, through late November 2026.
Construction Hours: 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The project is scheduled to be completed in late November 2026.

Air Quality Update
Reducing Air Pollution on High Pollution Advisory Days
Weather plays a major role in air quality. While rain can help clear pollution, other factors like wind speed/direction and dust (PM₁₀) can affect air pollution. PM₁₀ affects respiratory health, especially for those in sensitive groups.
You can help reduce PM₁₀ by:
- Applying water before, during, and after dust-generating activities
- Reducing speed while driving on unpaved roads
- Avoiding parking on unpaved parking lots
- Keeping vacant lots stable with water or gravel

Environmental Services Update
MCESD Transfer Station Closures
Maricopa County opened waste transfer stations to ensure services are available in remote areas where other services did not exist. However, in recent years, private and municipal service providers have expanded their capacity and coverage areas and are now positioned to meet community needs. The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department is exploring the closure and/or privatization of its six waste transfer stations. An evaluation process is underway to determine the best options going forward.
A second hybrid stakeholder workshop is being held on August 13 at 3 p.m. in the BOS Auditorium (205 W. Jefferson St.) to provide background and hear resident concerns.

Public Health Update
Public Health Offers Back-to-School Immunizations
As back-to-school season begins, remember to make an appointment to ensure your family members are up to date on their immunizations.
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) operates four immunization clinics serving both children (from birth through age 18) and adults (19+). Appointments can be scheduled here at the MCDPH Central Phoenix, West Valley, East Valley, or Northwest (Glendale) clinics. Vaccines are provided free of charge year-round, regardless of insurance status.
MCDPH also offers immunization events across the county.

Vector Control Update
Help Prevent Mosquito Activity and Fight the Bite
With monsoon season underway, mosquitoes are likely becoming unwelcome guests. The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department (MCESD) conducts a proactive program that deploys year-round surveillance of mosquitoes. MCESD’s Vector Control division sets out more than 850 mosquito traps weekly throughout the county to test mosquitoes for mosquito-borne diseases and better target insecticides.
After rainfall, drain any rainwater that can collect around your house, including water that may have collected on buckets, garbage can lids, bird baths, etc. Please also apply repellent like DEET, Picaridin, and Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus to avoid bites.

Heat Relief Updates
In the midst of summer, it's more important than ever to follow all heat-safety guidelines. Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible, and keep an eye out for those who may need extra support in the heat.
The Maricopa County Public Health Department’s 2026 Heat Season Surveillance Dashboard is live and can be found here. As of the week ending August 8, 2026, there have been 51 total confirmed heat deaths and 479 are under investigation. For this same week in 2025, there were 23 total confirmed heat deaths and 317 were still under investigation.
To stay cool in extreme heat, Maricopa County residents are encouraged to call 2-1-1 for help or find a heat relief site at a community center, church, or library near them. Remember to check on vulnerable neighbors and learn more about the programs available to help Arizonans pay energy and utility bills, access transportation, and more here.

Animal Care & Control Updates
MCACC Joins NBCUniversal’s 12th Annual Clear the Shelters Campaign
Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) has joined NBCUniversal Local’s 12thannual Clear the Shelters pet adoption and donation campaign from August 1 to 31.
MCACC will be celebrating with waived adoption fees for large and senior dogs. Hill's Pet Nutrition will be sponsoring adoption fees for dogs that are 25 pounds and over and dogs 8 years or older throughout the month of August. Since its 2015 inception, Clear the Shelters has helped more than 1.3 million pets find new homes and has raised more than $5.6 million for participating shelters and rescues.
