 Maricopa County’s Primary Election was a tremendous success.
Approximately 675,000 ballots were cast, and within just 27 hours of polls closing, 99% of ballots had been tabulated and reported.
That is an incredible accomplishment, and I am proud of the Elections Department, the Recorder’s Office, and the poll workers who made it possible.
I am also grateful to the Arizona Legislature for passing a new law that allows voters dropping off an early ballot in person to verify their identity with an ID.
More than 77,000 early ballots were dropped off on Election Day. Approximately 23,000 of those voters used the new check-in process to verify their identity on-site.
Because those ballots did not need to go through the traditional signature verification process at the Recorder’s Office, they could be tabulated on-site and included in Election Night results.
I used the new process myself, and I heard from voters and poll workers who said it was fast, efficient, and secure. This was a major step forward for voters and for faster election results.
This election included an unprecedented number of moving parts. Election Day was moved up by two weeks. New election laws and operating procedures were implemented. Responsibilities were divided between the Board and Recorder’s Office in new ways. And newly elected officials, including me, were overseeing the process for the first time.
With more than 230 voting locations across the county, there were a few isolated power and SiteBook connectivity issues. Staff responded quickly, and the election continued to operate smoothly overall.
This was a tremendous team effort. The Elections Department, the Recorder’s Office, our poll workers, and every employee supporting the operation knocked it out of the park.
