Supervisor's Message
Public Workshop for Waste Transfer Stations
Maricopa County-operated transfer stations have long been an inexpensive and reliable option for residents living in rural parts of the county to dispose of waste. However, fees have not covered the cost of operations, and the shortfall, now in excess of $1 million, has been funded by taxpayers countywide for several years. The current plan is to gauge interest from cities and private enterprises through a bid process for the transfer stations, which would result in Maricopa County no longer operating the stations beginning January 1, 2027.
The Cave Creek Transfer Station has the highest volume, by far, and I am aware of heavy community reliance on the Cave Creek station as a convenient, inexpensive option. Thanks to all who have reached out to advocate keeping the transfer station open.
On June 18, the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department is hosting a public workshop explaining the proposal and updating the public on the response to our Request for Information (RFI), which includes soliciting operators for the station.
In the meantime, we want to hear from you. Please submit your comments on the proposal. Please visit the Transfer Station webpage.
