October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed its commitment to ending abuse in our community. Last year, 61 Arizonans lost their lives to domestic violence–related homicides, more than half of them here in Maricopa County. Behind every number is a human life — often an entire family — that has been deeply impacted by abuse. This is unacceptable and it takes each of us to join together to condemn abuse and model and encourage healthy relationships. The County is lighting our Administration Building purple throughout October. County library branches will host donation drives for local shelters. Residents are encouraged to learn the warning signs of abuse, share resources like ACESDV.org, and stand with survivors.

Environmental Services Update
There has been an increase in illegal food vendors in Maricopa County. While we all enjoy good food, it is important to remember that vendors must have the proper permits to ensure food safety and protect public health. If you are unsure, look for the posted permits or kindly ask the vendor directly.
For more information, please visit Environmental Services | Maricopa County, AZ
Thank you for helping us keep our community safe and supported!

New River Kiwanis Park Ribbon Cutting
I had so much fun joining the New River community to reopen their “new” park. Thanks to my predecessor, former Supervisor Gates, New River Kiwanis Park received funding for much-needed improvements to the playground and gathering spaces. Working together, Maricopa County Parks, the New River Kiwanis and park neighbors ensured that the project was completed and I was honored to cut the ribbon!
MCDOT Updates
The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) wants to thank you for your continued patience as we work on improving traffic flow and turning movements at 36th Street and Carefree Highway. This summer, the Carefree Highway at 36th Street Project (TT0720) completed the scoping process and is now being designed. The proposed improvements include:
- An eastbound acceleration lane to assist with merging from 36th Street onto Carefree Highway.
- A raised median island at the intersection.
- New paving on portions of Carefree Highway within the project area.
- A new traffic signal was evaluated during the scoping process; however one is not warranted at this location based on traffic studies.
Next Steps: Design is underway. Updates will be provided periodically as the project progresses toward construction, with anticipated construction in FY 2027. For more information visit mcdot.me/Carefree-36th.
MCDOT is dedicated to working with residents to provide transportation connections that improve people’s lives. If you have questions or comments to share, please call us at 602.506.3342 or email to MCDOTProjects@maricopa.gov.

Where To Be In District 3 - Cowtown Skateboards |
|
Cowtown Skateboards has been part of the Valley skate scene for almost 29 years, with shops in Phoenix, Glendale, Tempe, and Goodyear. More than just a store, Cowtown has grown into the hub of skateboarding in the Southwest—a place where skaters, artists, musicians, and loyal customers across generations come together. Each spring they host PHXAM, bringing amateur skateboarders from across the country and around the world, along with grassroots contests that keep the local scene thriving. In 2018 they launched the nonprofit Cowtown S.K.A.T.E. to give back even more. Its foundational program, Skateboard Angel, gives kids in underserved communities brand-new skateboards, now supporting 20+ local organizations and expanding nationwide through affiliate skate shops. Together, Cowtown Skateboards and Cowtown S.K.A.T.E. are about culture, community, and keeping skateboarding accessible for everyone.

 Rita | A5073932 | Fawn/White AM Pit Bull Ter/Mix | 9 years | Female
Hi there! I'm Rita — a sweet, gentle 8-year-old Pittie with a heart of gold and a whole lot of love to give. I may be a little extra special, but that just makes me extra awesome. I have something called Megaesophagus, which just means I need to eat sitting upright in my cool Bailey chair, and I need to stay that way for a little bit after meals so my tummy stays happy. I eat 3-4 small meals a day, and I have a special diet — but don't worry, my rescue team has this all figured out and will help my forever family every step of the way! I love people with my whole heart and soul. I'm calm, cuddly, and really just want to hang out and be your best friend. I’d do best in a quiet home — think calm vibes, cozy spaces, and maybe a laid-back doggy sibling or two. I’m not really into chaos or loud environments (so no rowdy pups or tiny humans for me, please). Even though my care routine takes a little more attention, I promise I’m worth every bit of it. My goofy smile, snuggly nature, and loving eyes will tell you everything you need to know. ?? Oh! And my adoption fee includes all the good stuff: I’m spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped — so I'm totally ready to start our life together. Could you be the one I’ve been waiting for?
