Supervisor Lesko Calls for An End to the Melendres Orders
"Right now, valuable resources are being wasted paying the salary of a court-appointed monitor and his staff due to the Melendres orders. This class action lawsuit was filed almost two decades and four sheriffs ago. It will cost County taxpayers an estimated $353 million by the end of 2026. That's unacceptable. On Wednesday, I attended a community meeting in the West Valley where residents talked about their public safety concerns. Lining the pockets of a court-appointed monitor instead of investing in the Sheriff's department doesn't make our neighborhoods safer.
This federal oversight has impacted the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office's (MCSO) hiring efforts. Right now, we have a shortage of deputies, detention officers and emergency dispatchers. When there are fewer deputies on the streets and fewer dispatchers answering emergency calls, our communities are less safe. My constituents in the West Valley deserve better. Maricopa County residents deserve better.
MCSO has done its part to reform its policies and practices to comply with the Melendres orders. It is time to put an end to this expensive federal oversight so deputies can get back to protecting Maricopa County residents."
