Environmental Services Update
With monsoon season upon us, remember the four Rs to fight the bite:
- REPEL mosquitos using EPA-registered insect repellent
- REMOVE standing water from your home and yard.
- REPAIR or replace damaged window and door screens.
- REMIND your family, friends, and neighbors about mosquito safety
The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department’s Vector Control Division deploys more than 800 routine mosquito traps every week and tests for diseases. Access new tools and resources to help your community fight the bite here.

Transportation Update
The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) recently held an informational Open House for the public to learn about plans for improvements to address drainage along 7th Street between Blue Eagle Lane and Carefree Highway. MCDOT provided visuals regarding the planned improvements and project team members were available to discuss the project with the residents. The purpose of this project is to implement drainage improvements needed to reduce overall maintenance of the drainage system and aid in the collection system for on-site flows.
For questions about this project or other projects, contact MCDOT by email at MCDOTProjects@maricopa.gov or by phone at (602) 506-3342.

Thank You for 20 Years of Service
At our June Board meeting we honored County Manager Jen Pokorski and Board Clerk Juanita Garza for 20 years of exceptional service to Maricopa County. Thank you, Jen and Juanita for two decades of excellence!
Animal Care & Control Updates
Tails Around Town is a great opportunity for you to take a dog on a “field trip" and give them a break from the shelter. It also helps them be seen and allows us to learn more about them to help find their perfect forever home. In turn, this is a way for our community to get involved and help shelter dogs.
Tails Around Town is offered at the West (2500 S 27th Ave, Phoenix) and East (1920 S Lewis, Mesa) shelters. Appointments will become available 60 days in advance. If no appointments are available, please check back daily for more time slots!

Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management
I recently toured Maricopa County’s new Department of Emergency Management (MCDEM) state of the art facility. We witnessed a tabletop exercise - a simulated emergency response scenario where MCDEM officials coordinated with partners from across the County. These trainings are vital to our preparedness, and build communications and strong partnerships with cities and towns across Maricopa County so they can be put into action in the event of an actual emergency.

As temperatures rise, here are a few key ways to stay safe:
- Drink plenty of water—before you feel thirsty.
- If you're sweating a lot or active outdoors, consider drinks with electrolytes.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked car.
- Locate cooling and respite centers: azmag.gov/heatrelief
- Call 2-1-1 or visit maricopa.gov/heat for heat relief services.

New Freedom Tour
I recently toured the New Freedom Center in Phoenix, a behavioral health campus which provides a disciplined environment with job training, wellness classes, and behavioral health care coupled with peer accountability. The facility includes secure housing, classrooms, and meeting spaces to equip participants with the tools they need to successfully re-enter the community.

After Dark in the Park - Drone Show
On Saturday, June 21st I joined Vice Mayor Anne O'Brien and Neighborhood Leaders from the Black Mountain Community Alliance at Deer Valley Park. The Phoenix Parks and Recreation hosted its first-ever drone light show, called After Dark in the Park. The drones replaced traditional fireworks with innovative drone displays. The free, family-friendly evening featured food trucks and live music, and lots of helpful information about Maricopa County and the City of Phoenix. The drone show took flight at 8:45 p.m. with synchronized drones illuminating the sky —offering a quiet, smoke-free celebration that’s easier on veterans, children, pets and the environment.

District 3 Business Spotlight - Cultivate Coffee |
|
District 3 is home to many great coffee shops. One of my favorites is Cultivate Coffee, located in the heart of Sunnyslope at 505 E. Dunlap. Founded by Bethany and Christopher Priebe, it is more than a coffee roastery. Cultivate Coffee, or "Cultivate" as the locals call it, employs young adults aging out of the foster care system. Youth are welcomed into the community, given paid work opportunities and trained in transferable job skills. It's a great place to meet, or simply grab a cup of coffee and go. You'll be supporting a great cause and sipping great coffee.

Smokey | 1 year old | 38 lbs | neutered male | A5145396 | Herding breed lovers, meet your match! Smokey is skilled at stealing hearts and your treats. He's just a year old and appears to be a heeler and Australian shepherd mix, which means he would thrive in a home with plenty of space to run and play. Smokey adores people and is always looking to make new friends everywhere he goes. Plus, he's dog friendly, so he would love to have a furry best friend of his own! His one request--no friends of the feline kind, please!
Find this precious boy at the West shelter. He's already neutered, which means he can go home today!
