Chairman Galvin Letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Priority of Public Safety in Maricopa County
“I sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi today expressing our shared commitment to public safety and effective policing. In the letter, I note that one of the largest obstacles to protecting our citizens is legal: judicial takeovers of law enforcement through consent decrees, court-appointed monitors, and judgments that mutate over time to prevent local governments from ever satisfying their requirements and regaining local control. Maricopa County knows this experience well, as we have spent over $300 million in complying with a federal court order. I welcome the chance to discuss the proper relationship between federal courts and local elected officials with the Attorney General. I urge the Department of Justice to abandon the notion of a judgement against the City of Phoenix and restore some limitations on consent decrees.”
