At today’s Maricopa County Board of Supervisors meeting, and from many letters to the board, I listened to concerns from the public regarding materials accessible to children in our county libraries. Providing library services is a complex issue—one that requires both respect for the First Amendment and a strong commitment to the role our libraries play in serving families. Our libraries must always support the mission of being safe, enriching spaces for children, while also deferring to parents as the primary guides in their children's development. The goal is to find a balance that work ensures parents have clear oversight when it comes to sexually explicit materials, so they can make informed choices with their children. I’ll continue working with my colleagues and the County Manager to strike that common-sense balance between common sense, parental involvement, and community trust.
