I am proud to announce that Maricopa County has released its FY 2024 Popular Annual Financial Report, demonstrating the County’s efficient use of taxpayer dollars, historically low debt burden, and overall economic strength in comparison to other counties of a similar size.
In FY 2024, Maricopa County spent $784 per resident. Benchmark counties of a similar size spent an average of $1,748 per resident.
As a result of its strong financial and economic position, Maricopa County maintains a best-in-class AAA/Aaa bond rating from all three major credit rating agencies. In addition, a long-term strategy to support employee retirement funds has resulted in a 40% increase in funded status for law enforcement retirement funds (PSPRS, CORP Detention).
As of June 2024, Maricopa County's unemployment rate was 3.4%, a half percent lower than in June 2023, and below the state rate of 3.9% and the nationwide rate of 4.3%.
The Board of Supervisors has worked to decrease property tax rates for four straight years, taking the rate from 1.64% in FY 2020 to 1.41% in FY 2024. Maricopa County government received 13% of each property tax dollar – the lion’s share went to schools and community colleges (65%).

Maricopa County Department of Public Health Report Showing First Decline in Heat Deaths in a Decade
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) has released its 2024 preliminary report on heat-related deaths showing 602 confirmed deaths with eight under investigation.
This marks the first year-over-year decrease in heat deaths since 2014, down from the record-breaking 645 deaths in 2023, despite being the hottest summer on record.
People experiencing homelessness, older adults, and people who use substances are among the groups most impacted by extreme heat. In 2024, 349 of 645 heat-related deaths involved substances, and 89% involved stimulants. 77% of deaths occurred outdoors. Among indoor deaths, 88% had an air conditioning unit present, but 70% of those A/C units were non-functional.
In 2024, MCDPH will continue supporting prevention and response efforts by:
- Continuing partnership with Phoenix, Glendale, Chandler, Mesa, and Tempe to expand hours and days of operation of heat relief sites.
- Continuing contracts with community-based organizations to distribute water.
- Expanding public awareness of cooling centers, including 2-1-1 and transportation assistance.
- Increasing collaboration with local substance use harm reduction partners.
The final 2024 heat deaths report will be released in spring 2025 and will be published here. For more details on heat-related illnesses and data, visit Maricopa.gov/Heat.
