How Maricopa County Prepares for Wildfires
|
|
|
As the deadly Palisades and Eaton wildfires continue burning across Southern California, we wanted to let you know about the role Maricopa County staff play in protecting the region from natural disasters.
The Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management (MCDEM) plans and practices year round to ensure the County is ready to respond to a variety of emergency situations. As just one example, MCDEM partners with 44 agencies and communities on the Maricopa County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (MCCWPP), a framework to help local governments, fire departments, districts and residents identify at-risk public and private lands to better protect those lands from a severe wildfire threat. A working group made up Core Team Members meets every 6 months, and the CWPP is reviewed and revised every 5 years. Still, there is nothing that can take the place of personal readiness. Take a look at MCDEM resources below to get started.

What You Can Do to Protect Yourself
Arizona's dry weather puts us at risk for wildfires, and heavy rains during the monsoon can lead to flooding. Here are a few preventative measures you can take:
- Clear brush and debris from around your home to reduce fire risks.
- Maintain gutters and drains to help prevent flooding.
- Create and Emergency Kit for you and your family.
- Stay informed about local risks at Maricopa.gov/ready
Ready, Set, Go!
It's important to be ready at a moment's notice in case of a natural disaster like a wildfire. Just remember: Ready, Set, Go.
-
READY: Have a plan, pack a go-bag, and stay weather-aware.
- SET: Be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
- GO: Evacuate the area and follow instructions from officials.

Pet of the Week
Morris has been waiting for a forever home for a long time! He's a smart boy who already knows how to "sit" and "wait", and he's always eager to learn more. He loves playing with toys, and especially likes to make a mess in the water! Morris is crate-trained and would prefer to be the only dog in your life. Morris is already neutered, which means he can go home today!
Happy Tails
Auggie (formerly known as Meg) has been the most incredible addition to our family. She has been so perfect with my 3 kids. She loves to snuggle! We didn’t set out to adopt an older dog (8 years old), as we had our heart set on a puppy. But when we saw her it was love at first sight for all of us! Auggie loves camping, fishing, warm campfires and lots of love from her grandma and great grandma. She is spoiled and gets home-cooked fresh dog food every day and long walks to see the world. - Jenna
