TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
Who Voted And How?
|
|
|
Nearly 2.1 million registered Maricopa County voters participated in the 2024 General Election. 87.6% of voters cast an early ballot, but how and when they returned it varied. Here’s the breakdown:
- Voted early in-person at a Vote Center: 218,368
- Voted in-person on Election Day: 256,057
- Returned an early ballot to a Vote Center or Drop Box: 631,006
- Returned an early ballot by U.S. Mail: 973,029
We’re proud of our election workers who made sure every legal ballot counted. With a two-page ballot, that meant staff had to process twice the amount of paper as usual (4,133,881 pages, to be exact!). Thank you, voters and thank you, election heroes!

What’s Next?
Maricopa County conducts tests of the tabulation equipment before and after every election to ensure the integrity of the results. A post-election logic and accuracy test will be done at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 19) at the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center. You can watch it at Maricopa.Vote by clicking on our Live Camera Feeds.
State law requires county boards of supervisors to canvass election results. This is an accounting of all ballots cast and certifies the results as accurate. The 2024 General Election Canvass will take place on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on Maricopa County’s YouTube channel. Election results are not official until canvassed by the Board of Supervisors.

Will There Be Recounts?
Under state law, elections decided by less than half a percentage point automatically go to a recount. Once the results have been canvassed, we will know which, if any, contests are subject to an automatic recount.
At this point, it appears the District 3 County Supervisor contest will likely require a recount.
Under state law, the recount must be conducted by running paper ballots from the applicable race through the designated electronic voting equipment. While the recount is in progress, the officer(s) in charge of elections may not publicly release vote totals from the recount.
At the conclusion of the recount, the officer(s) in charge of elections must provide the official results to the filing officer who initiated the recount. Once the filing officer has collected all the recount results, the filing officer must appear at the scheduled court hearing and provide the sealed results to the court.
The court must declare the winner in open court. The court announcement and/or order, constitute the official result for the recounted race, making it unnecessary to recanvass the race.

Happy Tails
"I lost my precious Dollie in March of 2023...I promised myself no more pets, as I already have a potbelly pig and I just couldn't bear to go through another loss. So, 5 months later I was ready to donate a few of her things and made the trip to MCACC. I thought, "I'm just gonna browse while I'm here." I spotted a little girl and thought, "I'll just meet her because I'm not ready for another, nor do I want that heartache again." Celeste, renamed Tilly, was picked up the next day. We celebrated our Gotcha Day in August."
