"Since its inception, Pride Month has been a celebration of individuality, authentic expression, and standing up against discrimination.
While Arizona has made progress in advancing the rights of individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, there is still a lot of work to be done.
We need to do a better job of protecting LGBTQ+ community members of all ages, understanding that everyone's at a different point in their journey. They need our allyship in creating safe environments of acceptance and reassurance.
That's one reason I'm hosting a "unity luncheon" for County staff this month, because each of us have a role to play in creating an inclusive environment for all.
Unfortunately, too many elected officials in our state are still advocating for homophobic and transphobic bills that restrict human rights and freedom of expression for LGBTQ+ community members.
These harmful ideologies are morally wrong. It's also bad business for Arizona to be nationally known as a state that makes laws that punish people for being who they are.
But that's not the state I know and love. The majority of Arizonans are dedicated to making our state a diverse and welcoming place to live, love, and work.
This month, I ask you to join me in fighting for equality, respect, and compassion for all Arizonans."
