As the temperatures rise across the Valley, we remain busy here at Maricopa County getting the people’s work done. As a reminder, my office is always available via email or telephone call to be of service to you. In addition, I am excited to be hosting another “County Coffee” on Tuesday, April 30 to discuss the County’s highly anticipated North Valley Library. Bike to Work Day
Bike to Work Day is an annual collaboration between Maricopa County, the City of Phoenix, Valley Metro, Scottsdale Old School Bicycle Rentals, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Maricopa County volunteers to support and encourage employees’ health and wellbeing. Over 100 Maricopa County employees participated in the 4 mile bike ride to help improve air quality and reduce pollution in Downtown Phoenix.

Stormwater Pollution Prevention Contest: Congratulations Nicole Matrix
District 3 would like to congratulate Nicole Matrix on this year’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Poster Contest! She won first place in the 3rd/4th grade category. The County received over 500 entries including 28 entries from schools in District 3. One of those entries came from Nicole Matrix, a 4th grader at Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory.
New at Maricopa County: Permit Center
Have you heard the big news? Maricopa County will soon be rolling out a new online permitting system to make doing business with the County easier, faster, and more efficient. The enhanced system comes with a dashboard feature where you can monitor all of your permit activity, as well as a Decision Engine to help you navigate the new and improved layout. Defending Democracy in the Disinformation Age
Supervisor Gates joined a panel at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism hosted by the McCain Institute to discuss the state of democracy in the age of disinformation. The panel discussed the risks associated with AI, deep fakes, and what the County is doing to ensure it conducts transparent, safe and secure elections in 2024.

Solar Eclipse at Maricopa County

New & Improved Board of Supervisors Auditorium
On April 9, the Board passed a resolution to establish formal rules of decorum at public meetings that can help ensure civil and orderly participation. These new rules will supplement updated auditorium security measures. The full list of public meeting rules and decorum can be found on the Clerk of the Board’s page, or through the link below.

Parks Update
With Memorial Day Weekend around the corner, please remember to take safety precautions to protect your loved ones. On Thursday, May 16, Supervisor Gates will be attending a Lake & Trail Safety Press Event at Lake Pleasant to help raise awareness about the dangers of drowning hazards on lakes and heat exposure on trails. Supervisor Gates is partnering with Vice Chairman Galvin, the Maricopa County Parks & Recreation Department, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Arizona Game and Fish Department to share helpful safety tips with residents and visitors who are enjoying the holiday weekend at beautiful parks, trails, and lakes across the Valley.

Animal Care & Control Updates
Animal Care & Control is excited to be opening the new 84,000 square foot East Valley Animal Care Center to the public on May 2 in Mesa (address is 1920 S. Lewis). The new shelter will feature 346 kennels and 21 yards and will replace the County’s old East Valley animal shelter which closed permanently on April 22. Special activities will be held for the public during the “Unleashing Our Potential” grand opening on May 4.
