TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
Election Calendar Solution
|
|
|
The House and Senate passed and the Governor signed legislation to fix a significant election calendar issue, providing counties the additional days needed to complete automatic recounts in 2024 and still meet state and federal deadlines.
· The changes take effect immediately and will have little impact on the voter experience.
· The primary election will now be held one week earlier in 2024, on July 30th.
Maricopa County election officials are confident they can implement the other items in the legislation, which includes a change to the time period voters have to "cure" signatures.

Board Appoints Deputy Chief Russ Skinner as New Sheriff
There’s a new sheriff in town, but he’s far from a stranger. Russ Skinner has served the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for more than 30 years, including the last six as chief deputy. Today the Board of Supervisors appointed Skinner to succeed his former boss, Paul Penzone, as sheriff.
“Sheriff Skinner has served under sheriffs from both political parties, including his most recent six-year tenure as chief deputy for Sheriff Penzone,” said Chairman Jack Sellers, who represents District 1. “The board’s decision to appoint Sheriff Skinner was about choosing the most qualified candidate and ensuring stability and results for Maricopa County residents.”
Sheriff Skinner brings over 33 years of experience at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, having risen through the ranks to chief deputy, a role in which he oversees 4,000 staff members and manages a $507 million budget.

MCACC Award Petco Love Grant
Clifford was the very first dog Daryl ever fostered through MCACC. Daryl helped nurse him back to health and eventually got him adopted, but he never stopped thinking about Clifford.
When Clifford's new owner experienced life changes and could no longer care for him, he welcomed the happy and healthy pup back into his life.
Last year, Daryl submitted his tale to Petco Love Stories, a campaign for communities to share their stories about how their adopted pet changed their life. He was one of the winners, and MCACC was gifted a $10,000 grant to continue our mission of finding positive outcomes for our animals!
