Statement from Chairman Jack Sellers on Urgent Election Calendar Issue
"Our state has many important quality-of-life issues to address including transportation, water, and housing, and I’m glad those issues received significant attention on the first day of legislative session.
What’s surprising, though, is that there was little recognition of the need to address the current statutes that are impacting Arizona citizens' ability to vote and have representation at the Electoral College.
For months, counties have asked policy makers to adjust the statewide election calendar to account for an expected increase in automatic recounts.
Counties presented lawmakers and the governor with a 19-day solution for this year’s Primary and General Elections – a way to cut 19 days to meet all deadlines under current law. That includes the deadlines to send General Election ballots to military voters overseas and the Electoral Certification Deadline that ensures Arizona’s votes in the U.S. Presidential Election are counted.
I’m hopeful that elected leaders from both parties will realize the urgency of this issue and prioritize a fix to the election calendar that gives counties what they need to administer free, fair, and lawful elections that meet all statutory deadlines. A solution cannot wait any longer."
