TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
How Maricopa County is Addressing Increase in Infant Mortality Rate
|
|
|
Unfortunately, Arizona's infant mortality rate rose by 11 percent last year. We want to make sure that Maricopa County families know the programs that we have available to help them with their little ones. Our South Phoenix Fatherhood Program featured in this video helps decrease infant mortality rates by providing fathers with parenting classes to help them build secure attachments to their children and support their growing families. Read about more of our programming that helps little ones and their families start on a healthy path.
-
Nurse-Family Partnership: Helps expectant parents build a support network, learn best practices for safety and health, and more
-
High-Risk Perinatal Program: Connects parents of infants who are in the NICU for at least five days to free ongoing support
-
Safe Sleep: Simple ways for parents, healthcare providers, and caregivers to prevent sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
-
Maricopa SHIFT: Provides support to new and expectant parents with substance use
-
Lead Safe Maricopa County: Helps remove lead from homes (including rentals) to prevent lead poisoning in children
-
Children’s immunizations: Protect babies and children from preventable diseases, including RSV, which often leads to hospital visits in the fall and winter for little ones

Healthy Giving
This holiday season, make sure you give in a healthy and sustainable way. Give in a way that helps get a person experiencing homelessness one step closer to ending their homelessness. Handing out food or money on the street can end up creating trash on streets and perpetuating the cycle of homelessness. Instead partner with a local non-profit organization to donate or volunteer. Go to GiveSmartAZ.org to find a non-profit to partner with.

Antibiotics are not ALWAYS the Answer
It can be tempting to give your child antibiotics when they are sick, but they aren’t always the right tool to use. Antibiotics treat certain infections caused by bacteria. However, antibiotics should not be used to treat viruses live COVID-19, the flu, or the common cold.

Pet of the Week
Augusta is a big boy who thoroughly enjoys getting pets and attention, so he'd prefer to be the only animal in your life. He has been in and out of the shelter since April, but he's ready to find his forever home now! Augusta will go home neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped!
Happy Tails
"I adopted my little Moki in 2020. He had been a street dog and had been patched up with stitches from an animal bite. He is the center of my world and the big boss in my pack of 5 dogs and a cat. I love him dearly and can't stand being away from him and his siblings."
