 Supervisor's Message
Holiday Season
I hope you all had a great month of November and were able to spend time with your loved ones during Thanksgiving. Now that December is upon us, many of us will be busy preparing for the next holiday, whether it's making travel plans, shopping, or attending celebrations. During this time, please keep in mind that this holiday season is also about spreading kindness, joy, love, and compassion to others. Please be safe when traveling and let us all have a little more patience with all the extra people on the road and in the stores. Happy Holidays!

Every decade seems to bring a new drug epidemic that ravages Arizona communities. When I served as a civilian member on the Arizona Meth Project, I saw firsthand how methamphetamine tears families apart.
While you may have heard of fentanyl or felt its devastation, you may not fully understand how widespread this issue is. In 2022 alone, Arizona seized a staggering $28 million worth of fentanyl pills.
Additionally, fentanyl deaths have increased by 4,900% since 2015, making it even deadlier than meth. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office estimates that 60% of all drug-related deaths involve fentanyl, and on average, more than three people die every day due to fentanyl overdoses.
This drug’s effects cannot be underestimated – fentanyl is cheap, accessible, and can be 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. And while you may have a preconceived notion of who may try fentanyl, its addictive qualities can pose a threat to any of our loved ones.
While the effects of fentanyl will likely be felt for years to come, I am proud to say that Maricopa County has launched a countywide effort to combat this deadly drug and save lives.
Together, I know that Maricopa County can get ahead of this crisis, save lives, and keep our loved ones safe. Visit maricopa.gov/fentanyl to find resources for fighting fentanyl addiction.

Maricopa County Veterans Day Ceremony
On November 8th, I had the honor of speaking at our annual Maricopa County Veterans Day ceremony and being able to introduce my friend and keynote speaker, Major General Mick McGuire, United States Air Force (Ret.).
This ceremony gives us an opportunity to thank our Veterans in the Maricopa County workforce, of which 10% are either active or retired military.
Maricopa County is committed to doing what we can for our veterans, from programs that connect them to housing and jobs, to the annual StandDown for Veterans event. You can find more resources below.
I would like to thank you all for your courage, sacrifice and dedication to our great country.

New Transportation Advisory Board Member Pam Schwartz
At our November 15th Formal Board of Supervisor meeting, my colleagues and I approved the appointment of Pam Schwartz to the Maricopa County Transportation Advisory Board (TAB), representing Supervisorial District 4. I had the pleasure of working with Pam over the years while she served in different capacities as a SCHOA board member, and continues to serve as your Vice President. Some of the fundamental responsibilities as a TAB member will be to review and approve the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) 5-year Transportation Improvement Program and bring the voice of constituents to MCDOT transportation decisions. I am excited for Pam and know that she will do well in representing my district. Congratulations Pam!

Sun City Fire and Medical Dept- New Road Striping
I've always said that one of the best parts of this job is forging partnerships with our cities and towns to make life better for residents. I had the opportunity to do that recently when Rob Schmitz, the Acting Fire Chief for the Sun City Fire and Medical Department, reached out.
He mentioned an issue that’s been delaying emergency response times in Sun City. Turns out, cars were inadvertently stopping in front of the driveway to Sun City Fire Station 133, all because the road in front of our driveway was not clearly marked. When cars stop in front of the exit, emergency responders have to wait for traffic to clear, delaying help to those in need.
I had our team at the Maricopa County Department of Transportation come down to the fire station and add striping that makes it clear to drivers, they can’t stop in front of the driveway. It was a pretty simple solution, all things considered, but it still requires every driver to be aware and follow the rules of the road. Working with our emergency responders to help make us all safe, is one of the reasons I love being a public servant.
