A Child Witnesses Domestic Violence Once Every 44 Minutes
It's an unfortunate reality that home is not a safe place for everyone. According to the Arizona Coalition to End Domestic Violence, in 2022 there were over 101 domestic violence fatalities in Arizona and over half of them occurred right here in our county. For those who survive, the scars left behind will last a lifetime.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month reminding us that it's important to pay attention and speak up against abuse when we see it. Hear from your County Attorney about domestic violence and what you need to look out for.
.
"If you know someone who is experiencing abuse, reach out to them. If they need immediate help call 911 and report it to the police. Even if you're not sure about what to do, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline and talk to somebody about your options. Maricopa County is my hometown. I grew up here and I want it to be safe for all of us."
Break the Cycle and Find Support
Domestic violence does not discriminate: Anyone can experience domestic violence at any point in their life. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive and manipulative behaviors used to gain power and control over a partner. This abuse occurs in a cycle that becomes more frequent and dangerous over time.
Leaving an abuser if the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence. You can't control your partner's behavior, but you can break the cycle and take steps to protect yourself, your children, and pets from harm. A safety plan is a great way to get started.
Remember, it's not your fault and you're not alone. Please reach out to local domestic violence organizations throughout the valley for resources and support.
