Maricopa County and the City of El Mirage team up for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Hohokam Multi-use Trail located in El Mirage near Cactus Road and El Mirage Road. I am happy that we were able to help fund the trail in partnership with El Mirage. Maricopa County invested $1.2 million of Community Block Grant Coronavirus funding towards public facilities, (including outdoor recreational) to have continued use even during a pandemic- a portion of this money went toward the Hohokam Trail. This one-time funding addresses community needs following the Coronavirus pandemic.
Through a partnership with Maricopa County, the City of El Mirage was the lead agency on making necessary improvements to the existing trail. The Hohokam Multi-use Trail now provides a designated, safe accessible space to walk, bike, run/jog, and it addresses safety concerns by providing social distancing for people of all ages and abilities. The trail meets ADA requirements, has new safety rails in select locations and lighting. It also provides a safe corridor for access to employers, stores, schools and other community amenities.

Grand Canyon University
On September 26th, I made my annual trip to Grand Canyon University to speak at Professor Mike Hayes's Business ENT 320 class. I discussed marketing, networking, and public relations and the role they play in building and growing a career. Students asked a lot of great questions ranging from how to scale up their business to how to stay positive during this political climate. I encouraged them to register to vote and be active in their community. I also encouraged them to get out of their comfort zone, and use this unique time in life to find out who they truly are and what they want. It was a rewarding visit, and I'm grateful to Professor Hayes for the invitation.

White Tank Grand Avenue Area Plan Update
I am pleased with the progress of the update to the White Tank Grand Avenue Area Plan. The updated plan will help address the changing development challenges in this rapidly growing region of the county.
The existing plan encompasses a very large area of approx. 759 sq. miles, but rapid growth and municipal annexations dictate that the planning area be adjusted to approx. 727 sq. miles. Some areas to the east and south have been removed while territory to the northwest has been added in order to focus on the needs of current and future residents.
To date, the project team held three public meetings receiving feedback on the community’s vision for the future of the area. A fourth public meeting will be held on Monday, October 16th, 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. This meeting will unveil the draft plan to the community. Please visit www.maricopa.gov/whitetankgrandave for more details and for registration. Following the October 16th meeting, comments on the draft plan may still be provided as it moves forward to public hearings before the Planning & Zoning Commission on November 16th and the Board of Supervisors on December 6th.
Background on White Tank Grand Ave Area Plan
Maricopa County’s Vision 2030 Comprehensive Plan supports the concept of area plans, which provide more specific and localized planning guidance for unique areas in the County. The White Tank Grand Avenue Area Plan is one of eight County Area Plans. This 727 square mile region has experienced significant growth since adoption of the plan in 2000 and is being updated to better reflect current conditions and future aspirations for the area. The update process is designed to ensure the region is planned holistically and in coordination with the wide range of stakeholders and other interested parties in the area.

My colleagues and I approved agreements that will provide more than $3.75 million in funding dedicated to adding and rehabilitating housing in the West Valley. The projects, which are projected to assist 24 households, are funded with a portion of Maricopa County’s federal American Rescue Plant Act (ARPA) dollars.
Maricopa County has made significant investments in housing solutions for our residents over the past two years. These projects are another step towards enhancing the quality of life for our residents. By allocating over $3.75 million from ARPA funds, we're not just building houses; we're building hope, stability, and stronger communities in the West Valley.
These programs are aimed at improving housing conditions, ensuring affordability, and promoting sustainable residential development within our communities.

TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
HOW YOU CAN STAY HEALTHY THIS FALL

Flu Season Is Upon Us
In the United States, flu season usually occurs in the fall and winter. While influenza viruses spread year-round, most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February. The overall health impact (e.g., infections, hospitalizations, and deaths) of flu varies from season to season.
CDC Recommends an Annual Flu Vaccine
An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help reduce the risk flu and its potentially serious complications. September and October are ideal times to get vaccinated. As of September 16, 2023, CDC has received reports from manufacturers that 83.59 million doses of flu vaccine have been distributed across the U.S. so far this season.
Everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated against flu each year. Flu vaccination reduces the burden of flu illness, hospitalization, and death and getting vaccinated could also help protect others who are at higher risk to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions. If you have questions about which flu vaccine is right for you or getting your flu vaccine at the same time as another vaccine, talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider.
